About Kendra

Hi! My name is Kendra Billen (formally Jackson) and I am a native of Georgetown, Texas. I have lived in Fort Worth for the last ten years.

Teaching swimming lessons combines my three main passions: education, children, and swimming! I swam for a USA sanctioned swim team (Texas Gold Swimming) in Austin, TX from the age of 7 to the age of 18, when I departed for college. I then swam for Texas Christian University for four years. I am currently becoming involved in a number of triathlons and biking tours, as I am now considered a "retired swimmer!"

I taught swimming lessons for 9 years in the Austin area. I was an employee for the City of Pflugerville for 9 years, where I was a highly recommended teacher. The 2014 season will be my seventh year in DFW. I am the holder of the following certifications:

  • Water Safety Instructor
  • CPR for the Professional Rescuer
  • First Aid and
  • Automated External Defibrillator

I graduated from TCU with an undergraduate degree in Early Childhood Education and a Master's Degree in Special Education in 2008. In May of 2010, I earned a second Master's degree in Educational Administration through DBU. I am currently a special education teacher in Birdville ISD for children with behavioral disorders. I recently married my best friend and look forward to this new chapter in our lives (hence the name change)!

If there is anything else you would like to know regarding my qualifications for teaching swimming lessons, please contact me!

Services

My goal is to provide swimming lessons to a variety of audiences successfully. Listed below are the services provided. If you feel your needs are not being met or you have questions regarding my services, please don't hesitate to contact me!

Children's Private Swimming Lessons

I am open to teaching children of all ages. I believe that most children are most easily taught and swimming education is retained at or after the age of 3, however, I have taught children as young as 18 months of age. Private lessons are taught one-on-one and each lesson is individualized based on the child's needs.

Adult Private Swimming Lessons

It is never too late to learn to swim! One of my favorite groups to teach is adults because they are so eager to learn! Many adults find themselves hesitant when it comes to learning how to swim, but its benefits far outweigh any embarrassment. Many adults want to learn to swim for the benefit of their children, because they want to become more proficient, or simply because they want to pick up a new hobby!

Children with Disabilities

I have extensive experience when it comes to the education of children with disabilities and that includes swimming! I am able to work with a variety of disabilities, both physical and neurological. I have the most experience teaching children with Emotional Disturbances, Autism, Down Syndrome, and sensory integration disorders. Please don't hesitate to contact me regarding your or your child's disability so that we may discuss what is best for him or her in the water!

Semi-Private Swimming Lessons

Semi-private swimming lessons include two children at the same time. Many families choose this option out of convenience. I do, however, believe that private one-on-one lessons are most beneficial for both children and adults.

Skill Refinement and Maintenance

Those seeking skill refinement or skill maintenance are those that simply want to improve their strokes, prepare for an important race or triathlon, or receive work-outs that improve their training regiment. Contact me for further details!

FAQ

At what age should my child begin swimming lessons?

In my experience, the "prime" age for a child to begin learning is between 2 1/2 and 3. Of course, there are always exceptions. Children below the age of 2 simply need frequent exposure to the water- go to water parks and swimming pools. Show your child that the water is not a scary place to be, but still a place to be cautious. Splash around, play games, and allow your child to become comfortable being in the water. When this is done, children are more likely to be receptive to instruction when the time is right!

How long will it take for my child to learn to swim?

This depends on a number of factors: How old the child is, how many previous lessons your child has had, your child's comfortableness in the water, and most importantly, how much you want your child to learn!

Am I too old to learn how to swim?

Absolutely not! I enjoy teaching adults of all ages. The most important step is making that first contact!

How do I pay you?

I accept cash and check. Checks should be made out to Kendra Jackson.

What is your weather policy?

My weather policy is that we will swim rain or shine! If there is thunder or lightning accompanied with the rain, lessons will have to be canceled.

What is your preferred method of contact?

Once swim lessons begin, I prefer being contacted by e-mail. I am able to receive e-mails on my phone and this way, I have written record that I can easily refer back to. Of course, phone calls are always welcome!

How warm does the pool have to be for you to teach my child?

This is only an issue for lessons early in the season or if there is a large amount of rain during the summer. In order for both me, you, and/or your child to be comfortable, I prefer the water to be AT LEAST 78 degrees F in order to teach.

Where do you teach?

I do not currently have a home pool. All of my lessons take place in-home- I travel to you! Clients that do not have pools often learn at a family member, friend, or neighbor's pool.
